The Accent Ratio

Accent-to-ambient ratio of 3:1 to 5:1 is the sweet spot. If ambient is 300 lux, merchandise should receive 900–1,500 lux. Below 3:1, products don't 'pop'. Above 5:1, the space feels dark and uncomfortable.

Vertical Illumination

Retail is about seeing products on walls, shelves, and displays — vertical surfaces, not floors. Specify vertical illumination targets (Ev) not just horizontal (Eh). Use wall washers and adjustable spots aimed at shelving rather than downlights that light the floor.

Color Rendering for Product Categories

Different products need different CRI emphasis. Fashion requires CRI 90+ with strong R9 (red rendering) for accurate fabric colors. Food requires high R9 and R13 (skin tones) to make products look fresh. Jewelry needs CRI 95+ with high R15 for sparkle and clarity.

Before You Specify

Map product zones and determine value hierarchy
Set accent ratios: 3:1 for standard, 5:1 for hero displays
Choose narrow beams (12–24°) for focal points, wide (40–60°) for general
Specify CRI 90+ for fashion, CRI 95+ for jewelry/cosmetics
Plan adjustable track for seasonal display changes
Consider vertical illumination — light the walls, not the floor

Common Mistakes

Uniform lighting everywhere — kills the visual hierarchy that drives sales
Using only downlights — illuminates the floor, leaves products in shadow
Cool white (>4000K) in fashion retail — makes clothing look cheap
Low CRI (<80) in cosmetics — customers leave because colors look wrong
Fixed lighting for changing displays — track provides flexibility
