Types of Emergency Lighting

There are two main categories: **Escape route lighting** illuminates corridors, stairs, and exits so occupants can safely exit. **Standby lighting** maintains partial normal illumination so critical operations can continue (hospitals, data centers). Both activate automatically when mains power fails.

Key Standards

Refer to BS 5266 (UK/GCC commonly referenced), EN 1838 (European), and local civil defense requirements. UAE building codes reference these standards. Always verify with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for specific project requirements.

Before You Specify

Identify all escape routes on the fire safety plan
Verify local code requirements (duration, lux levels)
Select maintained or non-maintained fittings as required
Plan battery testing schedule (monthly functional, annual full discharge)
Coordinate exit sign placement with fire safety consultant
Ensure emergency lighting is on a separate circuit from normal lighting

Common Mistakes

Placing emergency lights too far apart — dark gaps in escape routes
Using 1-hour batteries where 3-hour is required by code
Not testing batteries regularly — dead batteries discovered during real emergency
Exit signs obscured by decorative elements or signage
Emergency lighting on the same circuit as normal — both fail together
