HUMAN-CENTRIC LIGHTING

HUMAN-CENTRIC LIGHTING

Aligning artificial lighting with natural circadian rhythms to improve wellbeing, productivity, and sleep quality.

WHAT IS HUMAN-CENTRIC LIGHTING?

Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) uses tunable white technology to mimic the natural progression of daylight throughout the day. By adjusting color temperature from energizing cool whites in the morning to relaxing warm whites in the evening, HCL supports our natural circadian rhythms.

Research shows that proper light exposure profoundly affects alertness, mood, sleep quality, and overall health. In modern buildings where people spend 90% of their time indoors, HCL helps restore the biological connection to natural light that our bodies evolved to depend on.

"HCL should feel natural, not technical. Users experience the benefits without understanding the technology."

CIRCADIAN LIGHTING CURVE

Morning (6-9 AM)

Temperature5000-6500K
Intensity100%

Cool white promotes alertness and focus

Midday (9 AM-3 PM)

Temperature4000-5000K
Intensity100%

Neutral white maintains productivity

Afternoon (3-6 PM)

Temperature3500-4000K
Intensity80%

Gradual warmth eases transition

Evening (6+ PM)

Temperature2700-3000K
Intensity50%

Warm white encourages relaxation

Schedules are customized per project based on building location, occupancy patterns, and user requirements.

IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES

1

Define Schedules

Create predefined circadian curves based on space usage patterns and occupant needs

2

Allow Override

Provide manual control for user preference while maintaining automatic return to schedule

3

Avoid Complexity

Keep interfaces simple — users should experience benefits without understanding technology

4

Validate Results

Commission thoroughly and gather user feedback to refine schedules post-occupancy

BEST PRACTICES

DO

  • • Provide manual override for user preference
  • • Start with conservative transitions
  • • Gather post-occupancy feedback
  • • Coordinate with daylight availability

DON'T

  • • Make abrupt color temperature changes
  • • Ignore user complaints about discomfort
  • • Overcomplicate user interfaces
  • • Apply HCL in spaces with strong daylight
