DALI vs DMX: Choosing the Right Control Protocol
A technical comparison of the two dominant lighting control protocols and guidance on when to use each.

Selecting the right lighting control protocol is crucial for project success. This guide compares DALI and DMX to help you make informed decisions.
## DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface)
**Best For:** Commercial interiors, offices, retail, hospitality common areas
**Advantages:**
- Bidirectional communication (status feedback)
- Simple 2-wire installation
- Individual fixture addressing
- BMS integration
- Energy monitoring capability
**Limitations:**
- Limited to 64 addresses per line
- Slower response than DMX
- Not ideal for color-changing effects
## DMX (DMX512)
**Best For:** Facades, entertainment, architectural features, color-changing applications
**Advantages:**
- 512 channels per universe
- Fast response for dynamic effects
- Industry standard for entertainment
- Extensive fixture compatibility
- RDM remote configuration
**Limitations:**
- Unidirectional (standard DMX)
- Requires dedicated cabling
- No energy monitoring
- More complex addressing
## Hybrid Approaches
Many projects benefit from combining protocols:
- DALI for functional lighting
- DMX for feature/facade lighting
- Gateway integration for unified control
Our controls team can design hybrid systems optimized for your project requirements.
